The Falls of Rough Historic District , also known as the Green Family Farm Historic District , is a listed building complex, a so-called Historic District , in the village of Falls of Rough in Breckinridge County , Kentucky .
In 1830 the lawyer Willis Green II bought 80 hectares of land on both sides of the Rough River and thus the area of the present-day town. In the next few years he built a house, a sawmill and a grain mill, and a general store there. Green II soon gained a reputation as a successful businessman and industrial entrepreneur. He was a passionate Whig and friend of Henry Clay . From 1839 to 1845 Green II was a member of the United States House of Representatives . As a result, the family's property developed into a village that, at its height between 1900 and 1930, had around 250 inhabitants and a post office (built around 1905) and a Methodist , neo-Gothic church with a rectory (built around 1890 ) included. All buildings had the Green family as builders . In 1877, a Cleveland company built an arched 45 meter iron girder bridge over the Rough River. In 1890, Falls of Rough was opened up by a branch line and for this purpose a railway depot was built in town. After this railway line was abandoned in 1941, the building fell into disrepair and was only preserved as a ruin in the 1970s.
On January 31, 1978, the Falls of Rough Historic District was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
