List of apple varieties

Falstaff is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The variety has an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society .

description

The medium-sized apple is evenly structured and has the belly in the middle. He hardly shows any ribs. The basic color is a light yellowish green. In its original form, the body color is a brownish red with slightly darker stripes. In the case of the Red Falstaff, it is half to completely covered in bright red color. There are both streaky sections with lighter red and flat areas in darker purple. The lenticels are conspicuous. In the original form, they have dark red rings, which gives the apple a spotted appearance. The shell is a bit hard.

The flesh is cream-colored, rather large-celled and crisp. The taste is sweet with a slight acidity. Unusually for an apple that can be stored for several months, Falstaff is juicy and aromatic right from the time it is ready to be picked .

The stem is thin and very long and protrudes far beyond the deep, narrow stem pit. The stem pit can be rusted.

Cultivation

The tree grows moderately and requires comparatively little cutting. It is particularly suitable for growing in the garden, as it still brings very good yields even in poor conditions and poor treatment.

Falstaff is comparatively resistant to diseases and very frost hardy. Since Falstaff produces many flowers, the tree is ideal as a pollen donor. The apple is also self-fertilizing. As with the parent variety Golden Delicious, the yield from the trees is very high. They are ripe for picking in mid-October and the apples can be stored until well into December.

Like several other descendants of James Grieve, Falstaff is well suited for making apple juice.

history

Falstaff was created at the British research institute for fruit growing East Malling Research from a cross of James Grieve and Golden Delicious . The variety is the result of a test series with the aim of crossing a more intense aroma into the high-yielding and successful Golden Delicious.

It is named after a character from the works of Shakespeare: Sir John Falstaff .

A red fruit mutant "Red Falstaff" was found as a sport in Norfolk in 1983 .

The Meridian variety ( Cox Orange x Falstaff) comes from Falstaff and has been on the market as a juicy table apple since 1999.
