The Fangel Tower south of the village of Stralendorf, which belongs to the Mecklenburg community of Rome, is a round brick tower from the 14th century and was part of the Parchim Landwehr , a late medieval border security system around the city of Parchim . The former watch tower was once called a stone castle and only since the 19th century as a fishing tower . The building is a listed building.

location

The Fangelturm is located northeast of the city of Parchim, directly on the city limits, but already in the municipality of Rome in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district near the state road 16 leading to Mestlin on an arable land. To the east and west of the tower runs an earth wall overgrown with trees and scrub, which also belonged to the Parchimer Landwehr.

construction

The round brick tower is ten meters high. The wall thickness is one meter. The entrance door is 2.5 meters above the ground and was accessible via a retractable ladder. A galvanized spiral staircase was placed in front of the tower for today's ascent. There are narrow loopholes on three levels in the wall through which intruders can be fought and sound and light signals can be emitted in the direction of the former Wockertor of the city of Parchim.

history

The Landwehr emerged as the outer city defense ring of Parchims in the middle of the 14th century. The stone castle, known at the time, was built around 1360. It was located at the northern passage of the Landwehr and was an observation post far from the gates of the city, from which both the defense and the notification of the guard at the Wockertor through the loopholes was possible. Robber barons, for example , who drove herds of cattle from the town's field market, posed a threat . The name Fangelturm has only been handed down since the beginning of the 19th century, which suggests that the tower was used as a prison. The building was renovated by 2004.
