Farid Barron

Farid Barron (born April 23, 1971 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz pianist .

Barron, who comes from a family of musicians (his younger brother is the saxophonist Jafar Barron), began taking piano lessons at the age of seven, following his mother's example. His father, a jazz saxophonist, took him to sessions and performances when he was 16. When he attended Central Park High School in his hometown, the school's jazz ensemble won first prize at the Music Fest des Down Beat with him and he himself was honored as an "outstanding soloist". This made Wynton Marsalis aware of him, in whose septet he played as a student at Drexel University . He graduated from Temple University .

After serving as a soldier in the Air Force Band of the West between 1993 and 1997 , he became a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in 1999 , with which he also recorded. He replaced Shirley Scott in the house band at Ortlieb's Jazz House , where he played with musicians such as Arthur Harper , Mickey Roker , Bobby Durham , Jimmy Oliver and Johnny Coles . He has appeared on a Grammy Awards show with Clark Terry , Harry Sweets Edison , Dizzy Gillespie , James Moody , Donald Byrd and Jimmy Heath . Since 2009, Barron has succeeded the founder as pianist in Sun Ra Arkestra . He can also be heard on albums by Khan Jamal , Wycliffe Gordon , Herlin Riley and Walter Blanding .
