The Farol de Cacilhas is a lighthouse in the Portuguese town of Cacilhas ( Almada district ). It was built on the south bank of the Tagus River near the city's ferry terminal and was in operation from 1886 to 1978.
history
The lighthouse was inaugurated on January 15, 1886. Four months later, on May 9, 1886, a sound signal was added. During the First World War, it was out of service between 1916 and December 1918. In 1925 a fourth order belt optic (500 mm) was installed, and in 1931 the sound signal was switched to compressed air technology. In 1957 the tower was electrified.
Largely of no significance for shipping on the Tagus, it was shut down on May 18, 1978. Because of the construction of a new passenger terminal at the ferry port of Cacilhas the lighthouse was the end of 1983 on the Azores island of Terceira translocated and was there from 1986 as Farol da Ponta da Serreta in operation. In the first half of 2004 it was replaced by a modern fiberglass construction. On July 18, 2009, the tower was returned to its original location in Cacilhas.
description
