Fasque House

Fasque House is a manor house near the Scottish village of Fettercairn in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. In addition, with several external buildings, it forms a category A monument ensemble. Four buildings belonging to the property are also classified separately as Category B and six as Category C buildings. The entire property is on the Scottish Landscaping Register . The highest rating “outstanding” was awarded in two out of seven categories.

history

The Fasque estate was associated with the Ramsay clan in the late Middle Ages . King James III raised John Ramsay, Knight of Balmain and Fasque to lord in 1483 . In the course of the rebellion against the royal family, Ramsay was ostracized and his possessions confiscated. In 1498 he was finally pardoned. Alexander Ramsay, 5th Baronet , gave up his parliamentary seat after three years in 1715 in order to focus on the development of the property. There are plans by William Adam to build a new mansion near the medieval Fasque House.

A much smaller house was built on the site around 1750, but it was used for a maximum of 50 years. Today's Fasque House was built for Thomas Ramsay of Balmain between 1809 and 1813 . Scottish architect John Paterson is believed to be responsible for the design, which cost around £ 30,000 to implement. In 1828 the Liverpool- born merchant John Gladstone , who had made his fortune trading in Lancashire , bought the property . After Fasque House had remained unused for some time, Peter Gladstone had it restored and opened it to visitors.

description

The mansion is isolated around 1.5 kilometers north of Fettercairn. Its pseudo battlement reinforcement creates a castle-like character. The elongated sandstone building is staggered from the center on both sides. At the central, four-story tower, a beveled recess emerges over the entire height . A rusticated porte-cochère juts out at its foot , which was probably added between 1845 and 1850. Octagonal towers protrude from the facade . Flatter wings come off at the rear.
