Fasting walking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fast Walking connects the fasting and the fasting with hiking . Fasting differs from ordinary fasting in that exercise in the fresh air increases the effect of fasting. The simultaneous movement during the fasting period results in a higher basal metabolic rate , which means that the effects of starvation metabolism occur earlier.

history

As early as 1946, Mahatma Gandhi undertook a three-day long walk through the blazing heat in India . The only provisions he had with him were water with lemon and honey.

In 1953 the Swede Dr. Lennart Edrén carried out a self- experiment to prove his idea of the harmlessness of fasting. He covered more than 50 kilometers every day. To food he renounced, for thirst extinction he took only fresh spring water to itself. The result was a thoroughly positive experience. A year later he undertook the first 500 km long fasting march from Gothenburg to Stockholm . The Swedish press accompanied him and caused a sensation across the country. The vegetarian Dr. Edrén became a popular pioneer of the fasting migration movement in Europe. In 1964 he repeated the march with 20 volunteers. The idea of the fasting march was taken up by the German theologian , sociologist and political scientist Christoph Michl. He used them as “hunger marches” to make himself heard in the peace and environmental movements at home and abroad.

execution

Fasting is often done in groups, as it requires guidance from an experienced person. Depending on the type of fasting, the only provision is a supply of water or unsweetened herbal tea or juices . In the meantime, fasting walks are offered by numerous commercial providers at home and abroad in all seasons.

Similar to therapeutic fasting, the fasting period begins with a relief phase in which only easily digestible fruit and vegetables are eaten a few days beforehand . The daily hikes, depending on the provider, extend over distances of eight to 25 kilometers.

Doctors warn against following lengthy fasts without medical supervision. In any case, you should consult your trusted doctor before starting the fast.

Scientific investigations

A study published in March 2014 looked at an intensified form of fasting. 15 healthy but overweight men (age 30 to 55 years, BMI 27 to 35) received 0.8 grams of whey or sucrose per kilogram of body weight, as well as the required amount of electrolytes and other additives. To do this, they had to train 45 minutes a day on a hand-cranked ergometer and walk for eight hours. On average, the test subjects lost five kilograms of body weight within these four days, half of which consisted of muscle mass. For the next seven days, participants were not allowed to walk more than 10,000 steps a day and were given a diet that corresponded to their actual energy expenditure.

In the month after the study, they lost an average of one more kilogram of body weight, and even a year after the study they had only gained 50% of the body weight they lost. Although no nutritional advice was offered to participants and no lifestyle changes were suggested, the permanent loss of fat mass is greater than most other diets.
