Fatmir Limaj

Fatmir Limaj (born February 4, 1971 in Banja near Mališevo , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar politician and party leader of the Nisma Social Democrats . It is internationally controversial because of suspected criminal activities.

Political career

Fatmir Limaj studied law until 1994. During the Kosovo War he was the commander of the UÇK and was known in the paramilitary organization by the name of Çeliku (The Steel Man) . After the war he joined the Democratic Party of Kosovo , where many former KLA members joined.

Limaj has been a member of the parliament of the Republic of Kosovo since 2001 - with one interruption between 2004 and 2007.

Between 2008 and 2010 he headed the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications in the government cabinet of Hashim Thaçi ( PDK ). In addition, he held various high offices in the PDK.

War crimes suspected

Limaj was under house arrest on suspicion of war crimes in the village of Klečka during the Kosovo war in 1998/99. In 2007 he was acquitted by the UN tribunal in The Hague because no witnesses were found willing to testify against him.

The trial against Limaj and nine co-defendants began on November 11, 2011 in Pristina . On November 8, at the request of the defense, Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi , whose close colleague was Limaj, was questioned by officials from the European Union's Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).

On May 2, 2012, the Pristina District Court acquitted Fatmir Limaj on all charges. The key witness, known as “Witness X”, who had heavily incriminated Limaj with the accusation that he had mistreated and brutally killed Serbs and Kosovar-Albanian “collaborators” captured in the village of Klečka in central Kosovo during the Kosovo conflict in 1998/1999, was Found dead in Germany in 2011 and revealed his identity. While EULEX initially announced that his statement would remain valid, the judgment of May 2, 2012, with reference to a decision of March 21, 2012, announced that the court had classified it as inadmissible. On November 20, 2012, the Supreme Court of Kosovo decided to overturn the first-instance judgment and refer it back to the Pristina District Court for renegotiation.

Suspicion of corruption and bribery

EULEX has been investigating Fatmir Limaj since April 2010 for allegations of corruption and bribery. On November 16, 2012, the special public prosecutor's office filed an indictment u at the District Court of Pristina. a. against Fatmir Limaj in the "MTPT No. 1" case. He is accused of corruption and organized crime. On July 29, 2013, the district court in Pristina, chaired by an EULEX judge, admitted the majority of the charges against Fatmir Limaj to the main hearing. These include the allegations of organized crime, presumption of authority and the failure to declare election donations.

On March 20, 2013, Fatmir Limaj was questioned by the Special Prosecutor in the "MTPT No. 2" case. It is also said to be about corruption allegations against Fatmir Limaj and his bodyguard Shpejtim Telaku. The proceedings are currently under investigation.
