Faust and Marguerite is an American silent film from 1900. Directed by Edwin S. Porter . The film was released on February 28, 1900.
Movie content
Marguerite (Gretchen) is sitting in front of a fireplace, Faust is near her. A little later Mephisto enters their room and wants to give Faust a sword to kill Marguerite. Faust fends off this. Thereupon Mephisto wants to kill Marguerite herself, she turns into Faust, who also disappears. A skeleton appears in its place. Finally, Mephisto is left alone. At the end a priest appears and Marguerite and Faust are married.
Background information
This film is the first American film adaptation of the story of Johann Georg Faust . The film does not tell the story of Faust, but uses their motifs to demonstrate the then new techniques and possibilities of film. The film itself, however, is not the oldest film adaptation of the Faust material . Georges Méliès shot the first version with the film Faust et Marguerite as early as 1897 .
