Fausto Barreto

Fausto Barreto (born December 19, 1852 in Tauá, Ceará , † October 2, 1908 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian Romanist , Lusitanist , Brazilianist and politician.

Life

Barreto studied in Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro (medicine) and became a high school teacher. From 1883 he was Professor of Portuguese at the Colégio Pedro II and in 1887 drafted national examination regulations for Portuguese, which forced the preparation of a modern grammar. Together with Carlos de Laet (1847–1927) he created the Portuguese textbook in Brazil that has been authoritative and normative for decades. A street in Rio de Janeiro is named after him.
