Fausto dos Santos (born January 28, 1905 in Codó , Maranhão , † March 28, 1939 in Santos Dumont (Minas Gerais) ) was a Brazilian national football player . It was also called the black miracle . He received the nickname from the audience in Uruguay during the Football World Cup in 1930 . His game was characterized by a strong ball control and high pass security even with long balls.

career

society

Fausto started his career at Bangu AC from Rio de Janeiro. There he was discovered by Henry Welfare , who was coach of local rival CR Vasco da Gama at the time . He soon switched to Vasco after his friend Tinoco, who played for Vasco , convinced him. He had often spent the nights with him in Rio. With Tinoco and Mola he formed one of the most famous lines of attack at the time. At Vasco he became a national player. On January 5, 1931, on the eve of an international match against Uruguay, which was the first game in the newly created Copa Río Branco competition , Fausto was diagnosed with severe flu. It was only later that it turned out that this was the first sign of his tuberculosis disease. In 1931 Vasco was the first club from Rio and the second Brazilian club after CA Paulistano ever to go on a European tour. In the two friendly matches against FC Barcelona , Fausto gained enormous popularity. From Spain, Vasco traveled to Portugal and won six of eight games there. Vasco returned to Brazil without two of his players. Fausto and goalkeeper Jaguaré received contracts with FC Barcelona. With the club he was able to win the Campionat de Catalunya in 1931/32. He and Jaguaré turned down a highly endowed offer to stay with Barcelona and naturalization. Fausto's illness was already showing up more often at the time and no longer allowed him to play all games. His successor stations in Switzerland and Uruguay only lasted one year each. He found the end of his career at clubs in Rio. First again with Vasco and finally with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . Due to his illness, the coach Izidor Kürschner wanted to use him mainly in the reserve. Fausto then wanted to sue for the cancellation of his contract, but failed in court. In 1938 Fausto withdrew from active sport and expressly praised the work of Kürschner in a farewell letter. He stayed in Flamengo by getting involved in the junior division.

National team

He was a member of the Brazilian national team, for which he completed four official and two unofficial internationals. He did not score an international goal. He participated with Brazil in the first World Cup in 1930 .

He played both games against Yugoslavia and Bolivia. He also played friendship / test matches:

Trivia

Fausto's family originally came from the state of Maranhão, but moved to Rio de Janeiro because of the poor living conditions there .

Early on the evening of March 28, 1939, he died of tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Santos Dumont (Minas Gerais) . Fausto's last days were looked after by a self-appointed nun, Sister Catarina. Fausto was buried there in a shallow grave. The grave was provided with a simple wooden cross without a date or name.
