Faye-Ellen Silverman

Faye-Ellen Silverman (born October 2, 1947 in New York City ) is an American composer , music teacher and pianist .

Life

Silverman attended the Dalcroze School of Music from the age of four . At the age of thirteen she was the winner of the Parents League Competition with the juror Leopold Stokowski . She continued her education at Barnard College , Harvard University, and Columbia University . Her teachers included Otto Luening , William Sydeman , Leon Kirchner , Lukas Foss , Vladimir Ussachevski and Jack Beeson . She was also a piano student of Irma Wolpe and Russell Sherman. She taught u. a. at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center , the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University , the City University of New York and Columbia University and, since 1991, at Mannes College of Music .

With her compositions, Silverman represented the USA at the International Rostrum of Composers of UNESCO, won the Indiana State Composition Contest , the music prize of the National League of American Pen Women's , several prizes from the ASCAP and a prize from the American Music Center . She has also received scholarships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2007), the Rockefeller Foundation (1987) and the Composers' Conference (1985). She received composition commissions a. a. by Philip A. De Simone , Linda J. Warren , Larry Madison , Thomas Matta , the International Women's Brass Conference , the Monarch Brass Quintet , the Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates , the Con Spirito Woodwind Quintet , the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra , the Fromm Music Foundation , the Chamber Music Society of Baltimore and several wind ensembles as part of the National Endowment for the Arts Consortium Commissioning Program . She also composed pieces for the flautist Nina Assimakopoulos , Sergio Puccini and the Danish Corona Guitar Quartet .

Silverman has appeared as a pianist at the International Festival of Experimental Music in Bourges , in the Library of Congress and as a soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and made recordings for Radio Cologne . She is a founding member of the International Women's Brass Conference and the composers' association Music Under Construction .
