Fecal Matter ( . English , faeces') was an early band of Nirvana - frontman Kurt Cobain , which included members of the Melvins included.

history

The band was formed in the winter of 1985 and initially consisted of Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals), Dale Crover (bass) and Greg Hokanson (drums). Hokanson soon left the band. In 1986 the lineup changed again with Mike Dillard (drums) and Buzz Osborne (bass) before Cobain broke up the band. Cobain had at least one live appearance with Fecal Matter, in December 1985 at the Spot Club, MoClips, Washington with Hokanson and Crover.

Cobain and Crover recorded a 15-song demo in December 1985 at Cobain's aunt Mari Earl, who owned a four-track recorder. Crover also played the drums on these recordings in addition to the bass guitar. Cobain passed the recordings around to his circle of friends, and it was this demo (especially the song Spank Thru ) that led the later Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselić to form a band with Cobain.

The Fecal Matter demo tape, of which no copy has yet been made available to the public, is considered by Nirvana fan circles to be one of the most sought-after of the unreleased Cobain recordings. Mike Broomfield's documentary film Kurt & Courtney was originally supposed to contain excerpts from this demo, but Cobain's widow Courtney Love did not legally allow this, which is also noted in the film.

In the booklet of the Nirvana box set With the Lights Out , published in 2004, you can see a picture of the cover of the Fecal Matter demo tape, which reveals the actual name of the demo, Illiteracy will prevail , and the track list.

On the Nirvana CD Sliver: The Best of the Box , released on October 31, 2005 , one of the Fecal Matter songs has now been officially released. The song is about Spank Thru , which Kurt Cobain took up again in his later band Nirvana.

At least two other songs on the demo recording also became Nirvana songs, namely Downer and Anorexorcist , whose main riff is part of one of the Fecal Matter songs.

In March 2006, some more songs from the Fecal Matter demo were made available to fans on a website found by chance . Most of them are only song fragments, which were probably picked up by a microphone from a stereo system, but three songs are now completely available from a direct copy. The authenticity has already been confirmed. The three songs are Sound Of Dentage , Bambi Slaughter and Laminated Effect .
