The Federación de Mujeres Cubanas (FMC: Federation of Cuban Women ) is a mass organization whose policies and programs aim to promote equality and emancipation for Cuban women in all areas and levels of society. It was founded on August 23, 1960.

The FMC is made up of several women's organizations that existed before it was founded, which have merged into a unified federation. Among them are the Unidad Femenina Revolucionaria (UFR - Revolutionary Women's Unit), which united a large number of rural women, the Columna Agraria (rural column), the Brigadas Femeninas Revolucionarias (Female Revolutionary Brigades ), the Grupos de Mujeres Humanistas (groups of humanist women) and the Hermandad de Madres (sisterhood of mothers).

From the point of view of functionaries from the brother states of the Eastern Bloc , there was a remarkably open culture of discussion in the meetings of the FMC. However, even for Cuban women, everything had to be subordinated to the unconditional support of Máximo Líder Fidel Castro .

Structure and organization

The FMC is based on a territorial structure. Based on the national , provincial and municipal levels, which are composed of full-time secretaries and committees , the municipal organizations operate on the basis of voluntary work.

The organization has around 3.6 million members. The minimum age to join the FMC is 14 years.

Every five years the FMC holds its congress , which is the highest organ of the organization and in which the results of the work are discussed, new strategies and programs are adopted and the national committee and its secretaries are elected.

The full-time secretariat consists of the president of the organization, the general secretary, and three members who are responsible for the organization's work areas: international relations, education and ideological orientation.

Since the long-time president of the FMC and wife Raúl Castros , Vilma Espín , died in 2007, the office of president has remained vacant. A picture of the FMC founder, officially revered as a heroine and role model for Cuba's women, in uniform and with a rifle shouldered, now forms the organization's logo. As Secretary General, the highest-ranking functionary of the women's association has been Teresa Amarelle Boué since October 2012.

Trivia

According to UNICEF , the FMC is actively involved in raising awareness of the lack of support payments from parents to their children. Furthermore, the rights of children and women are discussed and explained in grassroots organizations and the duties of parents are conveyed.
