The main task of the agency is to issue advisory circulars (AC), airworthiness directives (AD), and guidelines ( FARs ) for all air traffic in the United States in order to take preventive measures to prevent accidents. The FAA was founded on August 23, 1958 by the US Congress as the Federal Aviation Agency due to several serious aircraft accidents . The two previous administrations Civil Aeronautics Administration and Airways Modernization Board were combined in the authority. In 1967 it became part of the US Department of Transportation and has operated under its current name ever since. In its range of tasks, it is comparable to the German Federal Aviation Office and the European Aviation Safety Agency .
