Bed base
The bed frame is a component of a bed . It serves as a base for the mattress . The bed frame is placed loosely in the bed frame. The mattress can be ventilated from below through a bed frame. It serves to improve lying comfort. A distinction is made between different constructions of the bed frame: The spring frame or wire frame has a horizontal spring tension or pure wire mesh. The spring frame is a grate with upright springs. The slatted frame, also called a spring wood frame in some designs , is a frame with wooden or plastic strips .
history
Beds used to have simple boards to support the mattress. With industrialization , these documents were replaced by stable spring gratings or the somewhat more expensive spring frame, which varied from region to region. Materials such as glass and carbon fibers have enabled further development. Modern bed bases have a very high density of support points that adapt to the body in an ergonomically flexible manner.
Spring grid or wire grid
The wire mattress consists of a mesh of wire parts, which are suspended longitudinally elastic by metal springs, so to speak a grid on a frame.
Spring frame
Spring frames have wire springs braced in metal arches that cushion the mesh vertically . The disadvantage of this construction is that after some time of use, hollows develop (mostly in the hip area of the person lying down) because the springs wear out. Another disadvantage is the squeaking of the metal elements that are movably suspended with one another. The suspension can be isolated from noise by using small leather washers. A stable protective blanket is placed on the metal and then the actual mattress.
Box spring bed
One form of the spring frame is the box spring bed. Box spring means in German spring and essentially describes the structure of the undercarriage. The box spring bed is widespread in the USA.
Slatted frame
The term “lath” refers to the bars placed at right angles to the long side of the frame . In the wooden version, such a bar today usually consists of six to seven glued layers of plywood.
A slatted frame has a stable rectangular frame made of wood, metal or plastic. The frame is slightly smaller than the inner dimension of the bed frame. Bars are usually made of wood, in special cases also made of fiber-reinforced plastic. As a rule, an elastic plastic holder, so-called loose bearing, is used for fastening . The bars can be placed single or double in areas of higher body weight (e.g. hips). In addition, a distinction is made between slatted frames that overlap and are inside. With a bar-overlapping slatted frame, the flexible strips lie over the bar. The outer area of the slatted frame can also allow suspension. In contrast, the outer area of the inner slatted frame is rigid.
The slatted frame has now established itself primarily in Europe. The structural advantage is the distribution of the elasticity function on the individual strips. In modern slatted frames, different degrees of elasticity can be set for each slat . Various segments of the slatted frame can be adjusted using mechanical constructions or electric motor drives. Roll grille
Roll-up grate is the name for a slatted frame made from stable, barely resilient wooden slats. The wooden slats are made of solid hardwood (usually beech ). They are connected to each other by textile straps or plastic cords , possibly also kept at a distance by plastic tubes. Since such slatted frames can be rolled up, the name roll-up frame has become established, in contrast to the frame frame, which is rigid in its dimensions.
