Federico Roncali
Federico Roncali y Ceruti , Count ( Conde ) of Alcoy (born May 31, 1806 in Cádiz , † April 4, 1857 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lieutenant general , politician and Prime Minister of Spain .
Life
Military career and governor of Cuba
After finishing school, he completed military training. His promotion to Brigadier General ( Brigadier ) by his sponsor General Baldomero Espartero led to a serious government crisis. As a member of the Military Council ( Consejo de Guerra ) he suggested the Regent Espartero after the uprisings in October 1841 a crackdown on the rebels and their leader General Diego de León , actually on 15 October 1841 executed was. On the other hand, in December 1843, after the fall of Regent Espartero, he became military advisor to Prime Minister Luis González Bravo .
For his services he was appointed Senator for Life ( Senador Vitalicio ) on August 15, 1845 . On December 16, 1845 he was promoted to Lieutenant General (Teniente General). On May 10, 1846 he was raised as Count ( Conde ) of Alcoy to the non-hereditary nobility.
He was later from 1848 to 1850 governor and commander-in-chief ( Capitán General ) of the Royal Army ( Ejercito Real ) in Cuba . During his tenure as governor, he promoted the development of trade and agriculture and the creation of cities such as Unión de Reyes .
Prime Minister
On December 14, 1852, he was appointed Prime Minister of Spain to succeed Juan Bravo Murillo . As such, he formed a transitional cabinet consisting largely of military personnel, in which, after a government reshuffle, Antonio Benavides y Fernandez Navarrete, a civilian, was represented as Minister of the Interior ( Ministro de Gobernación ) and Minister for Funding ( Ministro de Fomento ). Roncali himself also took over the office of Foreign Minister (Ministro de Estado). Due to an internal military opposition, he had to resign on April 14, 1853 and hand over the office of Prime Minister to Francisco Lersundi Hormaechea .
He has received several awards for his military and political services:
- Grand Cross ( Gran Cruz ) of the Order de Carlos III ( Order of Charles III. )
- Knight ( Caballero ) of the Orden de San Fernando (Order of Saint Ferdinand)
- Knight of the Real y Militar Orden de San Hermenegildo (Royal and Military Order of the Holy Hermenegild )
His younger brother Joaquin Roncali y Ceruti was a long-time member of parliament ( Congreso de los Diputados ) and also temporarily foreign minister and minister for pardons and justice.
