Federseer Ried

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federseer Ried is a natural area of the main unit 040 Donau-Ablach-Platten in the northern Alpine foothills . In terms of the landscape type, it is a moor landscape (moor-rich cultural landscape). In sheet 179 Ulm of the geographical state survey 1: 200.000 (1952) the area is referred to as natural subunit 040.25 Federseebecken , the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation mentions exactly the same area as Federseer Ried .

The Federseer Ried is a former tongue basin of the Riss Cold Age , it has an area of 43 km² and is around 580 m above sea level. NN. The landscape is determined by the central Federsee with extensive moorland areas. The formerly much larger natural reservoir has been partially filled with sea clays and gravel. In addition to the siltation areas, there are relatively dry and calcareous weathered soils on the young moraine in the south. Since it is a pronounced wetland, the economic use is mainly limited to extensive grazing . Agriculture is only possible in the dry south. Here are also the forest areas, which mainly consist of spruce forests.

The landscape is of great importance nationwide as a humid habitat. There are biotope types of flat and transitional moors with large stocks of reed beds, floodplain and riparian forests as well as wet and humid meadows. These are important habitats for species in need of protection nationwide, such as Ciconia ciconia (white stork), Castor fiber (beaver), Coenonympha tullia (large meadow bird) or Luscinia svecica (bluethroat). In addition, the Federsee is a nationally important resting place for migratory birds.

Due to its character as a large wetland and moorland habitat, the Federsee is a nationally important excursion destination. Bad Buchau is the only larger place that is also a spa .
