Fehrbacher water tower (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Fehrbach water tower

The Fehrbach water tower was built in Fehrbach , a current district of Pirmasens , in the 1950s and served to supply the city with water.

Location

The tower is located in the eponymous Pirmasens district of Fehrbach. The location is at the highest point of the village, directly on the B 10 .

Building

The construction costs of the water tower in 1958 amounted to 300,000 DM, plus investment costs of 150,000 DM for the necessary reinforcement of the water pipeline to Gersbach . It was financed with, among other things, DM 50,000 in own funds, grants and loans from the “Wasserwerke der Felsalbgruppe ” association, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , the regional association and the Pirmasens regional savings bank .

The tower is 31 m high and the outer diameter at the top is 15.60 m. The total weight is 2000 t. The tower rises up to 440 m above sea level. Two ring-shaped containers have a capacity of 800 m³. 173 steps lead to the platform and the hilltop, which in good weather offer a panoramic view of Fehrbach and the rest of the Palatinate. A relief of a spring nymph decorates the entrance, it was made by the sculptor Karl Emanuel from Merzalben .

Coverage area

In addition to Fehrbach, the water tower also supplied the districts of Hengsberg and Windsberg as well as the surrounding communities of Petersberg including Staffelhof, Höheischweiler and Nünschweiler including Dusenbrücken and Huberhof.

history

The construction of the water tower became necessary in the 1950s to meet the increased water demand due to the increasing population of the communities. Due to the higher consumption, supply difficulties arose in the early 1950s and, at high temperatures, there were problems with fire-fighting safety. In 1956, the planning of a new elevated water tank began. The location was chosen next to the existing reservoir.

An architectural competition was announced and soil studies were carried out. These showed that sand-lime bricks with the necessary basic strength can only be found at a depth of 16 m. The Pirmasens government master builder Max Brunner won the architectural competition. His proposal received first prize from a jury on March 8, 1957. Theisinger and Probst company received the building contract. Fritz König from Steinalben was responsible for the statics. The inauguration of the water tower took place on July 26, 1958. The inauguration was followed by a large crowd in bright sunshine on a Saturday morning. Flags were hoisted, the Winzler trombone choir played in the gallery and the Fehrbach children's choir played on a decorated podium. Guests from near and far attended the ceremonial commissioning of the vital structure.

In the following decades, the water supply was modernized. At the same time, their need decreased. In this way, the tower, which was recently owned by the Pirmasens municipal utilities, became increasingly dispensable. This led to its shutdown at the end of 2015. Accordingly, its demolition is being considered. At the beginning of 2013, consideration was given to having it illuminated on the occasion of the Rhineland-Palatinate Day taking place in Pirmasens and to renovating it accordingly.
