The Death of Cleopatra by Felice Ficherelli

Felice Ficherelli (* 1605 in San Gimignano ; † 1660 ) was an Italian Baroque painter who was mainly active in Tuscany .

Ficherelli was a student of Jacopo da Empoli . His early works were pictures for aristocratic clients, such as Conte Bardi, who advised Ficherelli to go to Florence and study with Jacopi da Empoli. In the workshop he was nicknamed Felice Riposo (= Felice the leisurely) because of his lazy nature .

There is still a copy of Ficherelli's picture of Saint Praxedis , which some scholars ascribe to Jan Vermeer van Delft, while others deny Vermeer's authorship. This copy bears the signature "[Ver] Meer N [aar] R [ip] o [s] o" for "Vermeer nach Riposo" and is dated from 1655. Ficherelli's picture is in the Fergmani Collection, Ferrarra .
