At the RCP as well as at the partner institutes (the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh , the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow , the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland ) qualifications in the form of membership (MRCP) and other more specialized qualifications can be acquired. There used to be a licentiate (LRCP). Fellows were also elected from among the members (FRCP), although there were also fellows from abroad. There are faculties of Pharmacology (Pharmaceutical Medicine) and Occupational Medicine.

The RCP was founded in 1518 with royal approval from Henry VIII . Since 1674 it has had the addition Royal . From the beginning it served the purpose of ensuring the qualifications of doctors and of taking action against non-qualified doctors (which at the time also included pharmacists, for example). They also published books (such as the London Pharmacopeia 1618, which regulated the composition of medicines, and the Nomenclature of Diseases 1869) and oversaw the publication of medical books in Britain.

The Royal College of Physicians has its own museum with extensive collections of, for example, medical instruments, sculptures and portraits as well as silver.

The RCP was previously located in what is now Canada House in Trafalgar Square and is now located in Regents Park in a building designed by Denys Lasdun in 1964 .

The College of Clinical Medicine magazine appears every two months .

The Lumleian Lecture takes place annually, named after Lord John Lumley (around 1533–1609), as well as the Croonian Lecture , the Bradshaw Lecture , the Goulstonian Lecture and the Harvenian Lecture in honor of William Harvey .

Surgeons and dentists have their own Royal College of Surgeons of England (and similar in Edinburgh and Ireland). There are also other medical associations such as the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists .
