Bernd Hertle

Bernd Hertle (* 1962 ) is a German horticultural scientist . The internationally recognized expert on perennials has been teaching and researching as a professor at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences since 1996 .

Life

Bernd Hertle was technical director of the Weihenstephan viewing garden from 1991 to 1996 , on which he also wrote his dissertation.

Bernd Hertle initially worked on facade greening projects in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1988 to 1991 he worked at the Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main and from 1991 to 1996 technical director of the Weihenstephan viewing garden .

With the dissertation mulch materials in perennial plantings. He received his doctorate in 1995 from the University of Hanover under Hans-Joachim Liesecke , investigating the effects on plant growth, soil, weed flora and care requirements in the Weihenstephan garden .

In 1996 he accepted the call from the Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences and took over the field of outdoor ornamental plants in the horticulture course. As a professor, he teaches perennial and woody studies as well as garden design . Hertle was also involved as dean of the horticultural and food technology faculty. From 2003 to March 2007 he headed the newly established institute for horticulture at the State Research Institute for Horticulture Weihenstephan. Here he had initially by the former CSU -Landesregierung and its agriculture minister Josef Miller implement restructuring decided what also staff cuts meant. The aim was to merge eight former institutes into one unit and to attract more third-party funding in the future . Under Hertle's leadership, the institute's third-party funding income almost doubled between 2003 and 2007.

During Hertle's tenure there were also significant innovations in the Weihenstephan Gardens. Among other things, the vegetable part of the allotment garden was relocated and rebuilt, and a complete redesign of the Oberdieck garden began. In October 2006 Bernd Hertle took over the management of the Weihenstephaner Gardens as the successor to his teacher Peter Kiermeier . He was faced with the challenge of maintaining and further developing their recognized high level in view of the job cuts at the research institute at the time.

In 2010 he also took over the management of the technical advisory board of the Hermannshof show and viewing garden in Weinheim .

Hertle made a name for himself in horticultural circles above all as a specialist in perennials . Since 1997 he has headed the “Perennial Sighting” working group in the Association of German Perennial Gardeners (BdS) , of which he is also a member. As the head of the working group, he primarily implemented changes in the screening , which made the evaluation system more transparent and the results comprehensible. This was widely accepted in the industry. The Association of German Perennial Gardeners awarded him the BdS badge of honor for this in 2009.

From 1998 to 2005 Hertle was also in charge of the international perennial register and from 1998 to 2006 he was President of the Commission for Plant Analysis of the International Perennial Union (ISU) .

He is also known to a broader audience beyond the German-speaking area through his advice on garden flowers. This is how they bloom most beautifully. The successful manual, which was created in collaboration with Peter Kiermeier and the photographer Marion Nickig , has also been translated into English , Finnish , Dutch , Czech and Lithuanian, among others .

For gravel gardens - blossom without watering (2010) he was awarded the German Garden Book Prize 2011 in the category “Best Advice”.
