The Rock saxifrage ( Saxifraga petraea ) is a species of the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The rock saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 10 to 20 centimeters. It is covered with fine, soft glandular hairs everywhere . The basal leaves are arranged in rosettes, long-stalked, semicircular-kidney-shaped and 10 to 30 millimeters wide. They have 3 to 5 deeply incised and roughly toothed lobes. The stem is tender, limp and frail as well as prostrate to ascending arching. It is branched from the bottom and has leaves. The flower stalks are thin, densely long-gland and many times longer than the flowers. The petals are 4 to 7 millimeters long, white, obovate and blunt at the front. The sepals are 2 millimeters long and ovate.

Flowering time is from May to July.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 64.

Occurrence

The rock saxifrage occurs in the southern Alps, from Lake Como to the Julian Alps and in Yugoslavia at altitudes of 200 to 2000 meters. New find in Austria near the Sattnitz, Carinthia (Kutschera / Lichtenegger / Haas 1994).
