Rock art concentrations in Sweden

The rock carvings by Frännarp probably come from the late phase of the Swedish Bronze Age (1,800–500 BC). They are located on a rock slab west of the Gryts kyrka , near Östra Göinge in Skåne .

Of the 61 petroglyphs ( Hällristningar in Swedish ), 17 depict horse carts with draft animals, 19 wheels with four spokes, eight circles, one depicts a ship and the rest depict other motifs. Because of the large number of cart depictions, the Frännarp site is unique in Sweden. Based on the design, the archaeologists differentiate between carvings by hunters and gatherers and those by arable farmers such as those by Frännarp.

Two-wheeled carts, so-called chariots , are common as far as southern Norway, but most of them were found in Skåne, for example near the grave of Kivik . They are interpreted as sun chariots; The wheels or wheel crosses are also used as a sun symbol or as a symbol for the cycle in nature and of life and death.
