The femur is the thigh of the arthropod's leg . The femur here usually represents the longest leg section and is connected to the tibia by a pocket knife-like hinge joint and to the hip ( coxa ) via a restricted ball joint ( nut joint ).

The femur (plural: femora ) is the third leg link (viewed from the body) in arachnids and insects . In centipedes , a prefemur is formed between the coxa and the femur. In crustaceans , the individual leg links are called differently.
