Fenniarail Oy is a private Finnish railway company founded in 2009 . The foundation and operation of the company are based on opening up freight transport to competition in Finland. Fenniarail started its active activity in 2016 and is active in the domestic freight transport.

Fenniarail is headquartered in Itä-Pasila . Until October 2014 the name of the company was Proxion Train .

On July 26, 2016, the company drove the first freight train from Kemijärvi to the port in Kotka .

history

Finnish rail freight transport was opened to competition in 2007, while passenger train transport will remain in the hands of the state-owned VR-Yhtymä until 2024 . The then founded company Proxion Train Oy applied for a license from the competition and consumer agency ( Finnish: Kilpailu- ja kuluttajavirasto ). It should be clarified whether VR competitors could rent locomotives and train drivers from VR or would have to provide their own locomotives. The license was granted to the successor company Fenniarail by the Ministry of Transport ( Finnish : Liikenne- ja viestintäministeriö ) on March 26, 2015.

Fenniarail then ordered three modernized diesel locomotives from the Czech company CZ LOKO in 2015 . Polish locomotives of the type S200 from industrial railway stocks served as donor locomotives , which were designated as CZ LOKO-Type 774.7F after the conversion. In Finland they have been given the series designation Dr18 . The blue locomotives Dr18 101-103 with a maximum speed of 90 km / h have the EVN "92 10 2102 10X-Y FIN-FERFI" and were delivered until November of the same year.

The first locomotive, which was delivered in the last week of September 2015, was tested from this period. After the test drives were completed, Fenniarail ordered two more locomotives, which were delivered in autumn 2017 as Dr18 104-105 . The locomotives are based in Kotka, where Fenniarail has rented two shed stands in the VR depot.

competitiveness

Fenniarail plans direct access to the mining, forestry and metal industries and wants to move freight trains from factories to ports. Fenniarail is aiming for a market share of 10% over a period of five years and needs 15 to 20 locomotives for this. The company's cost structure differs from that of its state competitor, which enables rapid growth. The company's diesel locomotives are the most powerful locomotives on the Finnish Railways.

Net sales were not reported in 2015. In 2016, sales amounted to EUR 353 thousand, and the operating result amounted to a loss of EUR 1.5 million. Due to the costly investments, the operation could so far only be carried out with losses.

traffic

From late summer 2016 until the electrification was completed on December 15, 2016, Fenniarail drove trains with diesel locomotives from the new Patokangas freight yard to Kemijärvi . Fenniarail also runs direct freight trains from Patokangas to the port in Kotka-Mussalo.

In May 2017, Fenniarail and UPM announced a long-term supply agreement for raw wood.

Connection between Finland and Russia

Cross-border transport between Finland and Russia was opened for competition on December 22, 2016. This means that trains to or from Russia in Finland can be carried by any railway company with an operating license in an EU country. In the past, these transports were carried out exclusively by the Finnish State Railways.

At the beginning of April 2017, Fenniarail drove the first wagons from the border station Vainikkala to Kotka. Rail transport across the Russian border to Finland or vice versa requires equipment compatibility and compliance with administrative criteria. The Finnish authorities have to approve each car individually each time it enters Finland. The Fenniarail locomotives were equipped with clutch and braking systems for the Russian cars.
