Putty is the name of an adhesive and sealant. Derived from the connecting function of this mass, the phrase is something “putty”, for example in relation to an interpersonal relationship.

Historically, the term “Kitt” (also Kütt ) was generally used for very different types of binding agents such as glue , paste and mortar . Today it is often used as a compound with the materials to be connected, e.g. B. Glass putty or window putty.

Linseed oil putty is a sealing compound that consists of around 85 percent whipping chalk (calcium carbonate) and 15 percent of linseed oil or linseed oil varnish . It is commercially available as a pliable, kneadable mass. You can also make putty yourself from the ingredients of whiting chalk and linseed oil varnish. Putty is mainly used as a sealant when installing window panes, but can also be used, similar to wood putty , to repair damaged areas on wooden components. Putty hardens in the air through oxidation of the linseed oil over the course of several years and becomes brittle. It can then no longer follow the relative movements between window and glass and crumbles. This causes the window to leak and the cement must be repaired or renewed. Old, embrittled putty can be softened most gently by brief exposure to short-wave infrared rays and then gently scraped out. Corresponding emitters are available in stores.

Currently, insulating glass panes are mainly glazed with fully synthetic sealants . Classic linseed oil window putty is rarely used in industrial production, but is still used in traditional crafts for glazing, sealing and repair work, especially for single-glazed windows in wood, metal and concrete as well as for composite and box windows with wooden sashes. It is also still used for glazing antique furniture . Classic linseed oil window putty, in contrast to silicone, can be painted over with traditional linseed oil paint after just one week. However, if you want to paint it over with synthetic resin paint, it must first cure for up to four to six weeks.

Modern putty can also be produced as an intumescent material, which is used to seal off electrical and mechanical openings in components in order to achieve a certain fire resistance class .

Health hazards

Asbestos fibers were added to window putty until the mid-1980s in order to increase the stability of the composite. Since 1990, only asbestos-free putties may be used. Investigations by the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund showed that improper handling of old window putty composites can lead to the release of asbestos fibers. Depending on the respective processing method, for example when grinding, concentrations of up to one and a half million respirable asbestos fibers per cubic meter of room air can result. On the other hand, no fiber release could be measured when heating with infrared rays and then removing the putty. It is therefore essential to take a sample for material containing asbestos before processing the composites in question.
