Suva (also Suwa) is the capital of Fiji . It is located on the southeast coast of the main island Viti Levu in the province of Rewa of the administrative region Central Division , of which it is also the capital. In the 2017 census, the city had just under 94,100 inhabitants.
history
Suva was named the capital in 1877 after the previous capital Levuka on Ovalau had proven to be too narrow. It was not until 1910 that Suva received city rights through the Municipal Constitution Ordinance of 1909 . Between 1996 and 2007, Nasinu , now Fiji's second largest city, was spun off from the city of Suva.
politics
The highest body is the Suva City Council , consisting of 20 city councils. Today's Mayor (Lord Mayor) is the 2008 re-elected Ratu Peni Volavola of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party, also known as the United Fiji Party . Gabriel Jacob Marks (1870–1914), the first elected mayor of Suva, was killed with his wife in the sinking of the Canadian ocean liner Empress of Ireland .
