Matelita Buadromo

Matelita Buadromo (born January 15, 1996 in Suva ) is a Fijian swimmer who represented her home country at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London .

life and career

Buadromo was born in 1996 in the Fijian capital Suva on the main island Viti Levu , but grew up mainly on the Moala Islands . She completed her first swimming competitions as a second grade student at the Veiuto Primary School in Suva, where she took part in a school event. This was also the time when her run of success began and over the years she won more and more medals and broke existing swimming records. Three years later, Buadromo finally took part in their first international swimming competitions and represented Fiji at the Christchurch Wharenui Championships in New Zealand in 2006 . This year the young swimmer also received her first notable award. With annual Fiji Swimming Award night it was as Individual Medley Swimmer of the Year to German position Swimmer of the Year , awarded and qualified in the following year at the age of just eleven years for the Arafura Games in Australia .

Buadromo was recognized again at Fiji Swim Awards Night this year; this time as Distance Swimmer of the Year . In 2009 Buadromo won her first international medals at the Patana Tiger Sharks Age Group Championships in Bangkok , Thailand . There she received a total of five medals; once gold, as well as twice silver and bronze. The student also qualified for her first Oceania Swimming Championships . Buadromo received several awards at the Fiji Swim Awards Night 2010. She was named Freestyle Swimmer of the Year , Breaststroke Swimmer of the Year , Individual Medley Swimmer of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year .

In January 2011, Buadromo took part in the New South Wales Age Group National Championships in Australia and was also part of the three-man Fijian squad at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai . There she completed 100 meters breaststroke, where she was eliminated in the preliminary races with a time of 1: 40.70 and finished in 38th place in the final ranking. In the 200 meter breaststroke discipline, she also did not make it past the prelims and was 32nd in the final with a time of 2: 44.01. Nevertheless, she set new Fijian records with her times in both disciplines and set the records that had been in place since 2003. The 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia concluded Matelita Buadromo with two silver and four bronze medals.

Matelia Buadromo is one of the best Fijian swimmers of her generation, which she demonstrated again at the 2011 Fiji Swim Awards Night when she was named Backstroke Swimmer of the Year , Breaststroke Swimmer of the Year , Freestyle Swimmer of the Year and Best Female Athlete was awarded. At the Oceania Swimming Championships 2012 in New Caledonia, Buadromo took part again for her home country, where she won the bronze medal in the 200 meter freestyle. The young Fijian swimmer also qualified for the swimming competitions at the 2012 Summer Olympics . There she finally took part in the preliminaries to 100 meters chest on July 29th and came in third place within her group with a time of 1: 16.33 and thus missed advancement in her discipline. At the time of her participation in the Olympic Games, Buadromo attended the Yat Sen Secondary School in Fiji's capital Suva and was part of the Tritans Swimming Club, which is also located in Suva .
