history

Originally, a chapel built by Albrecht the Tailor between 1383 and 1394 stood on the site of today's church. In 1643, Deutschlandsberg was elevated to an independent parish. The present church was built by Jakob Schmerlaib from 1688 and was consecrated on October 5, 1704. In 1980 the interior of the church was restored.

description

The group of crosses on the outer wall

The exterior of the wall pillar church is structured by pilasters carved into the plaster . The church tower is to the west of the unadorned south wall of the church. Its substructure is Gothic and its upper floor as well as the pointed helmet that was added in 1868 are neo-Gothic . There is also a figural group of crosses, possibly made by Josef Pogner at the end of the 18th century , on the outer wall of the church.

The four-bay nave with a total of eight side chapels and galleries above it merges seamlessly with the two-bay choir with a semicircle. Both the nave and the choir are spanned by a cross vault with belt arches sitting on pillars . The two stained glass windows of the choir come from the former Liechtenstein crypt chapel in Wies . The sacristy and the oratory are attached to the side of the choir and are accessible via stairs. In the southern part of the nave there is a three-axis gallery.

The baroque high altar was erected at the beginning of the 18th century and its altarpiece shows a depiction of All Saints' Day . The free-standing tabernacle dates from the second quarter of the 18th century. The altars of the baroque side chapels date from the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary made around 1670/80 stands on the Marien Altar. According to an inscription on the predella by Matthias Märchl, the Aloysius Altar was erected in 1732 and the Altar of Fourteen Holy Helpers in 1734. The altarpiece of the Antonius altar was painted in 1702 by Franz Stainpichler , who also made most of the remaining altarpieces. The Mount of Olives altar dates from the middle of the 18th century. On another altar is a representation of the Pietà and the thief on the cross. The baroque pulpit dates from the beginning of the 18th century, and the organ, originally from the St. Ulrich am Ulrichsberg branch church , was installed in 1740. In 1875, after an act of vandalism, the then newly appointed pastor and dean August Bossi commissioned a new organ and inaugurated it in 1875. It was restored in 1967. In the years from 1875 onwards, the church was also fundamentally renovated in other parts (repair of the altars, new tower clock, high altar in 1882, church floor in 1884, etc.). Another general renovation took place in 1892/93, the pews date from this time. In 1889 the linden trees were planted in front of the church. A late Gothic crucifix hangs on the western wall of the church , which comes from the abandoned Dominican convent in Radlje ob Dravi . The church also contains pictures of the apostles painted in the second quarter of the 18th century and a tombstone from 1752.

Bells

The general ringing has consisted of five bells since 1868, plus a 60 kg train bell , which is rung at the hour of death of a person. The oldest bell is the Franz von Sales bell . It was cast in Graz in 1796. The train bell (also known as Joseph's bell) is dedicated to St. Joseph and bears the slogan “Snatch us from destruction when we die!”.

The other bells were cast in Salzburg and consecrated on May 14, 1950. The largest bell weighs 1476 kg and is dedicated to the patronage of the church to all saints . It has a diameter of 148 cm. The second largest bell is the Ave Maria bell, weighing 866 kg and 100 cm in diameter. The third bell is the Sacred Heart Bell with 525 kg, the fourth bell is the Laurentius bell with 368 kg. Their predecessors fell victim to the metal collections of the two world wars; they were delivered on November 24, 1916, September 1, 1917 and in 1942. The chime that replaced the bells after the First World War was raised in the tower on October 2, 1921 (two bells) and May 17, 1925 (three bells).
