Lote Daulako Tuqiri (born September 23, 1979 in Suva , Fiji ) is an Australian rugby union and former rugby league player on the position of the outer three quarters . He was a national player for Australia in both variants and has also played for the national rugby league team in Fiji. Since November 2009 he has been playing rugby union for the Leicester Tigers in the Guinness Premiership . At the same time, however, he also signed a contract with the Australian rugby league team Western Tigers , which caused some confusion.
Career
Rugby league
Tuqiri began his career in the variant rugby league with the Brisbane Broncos , in which he was selected in 1999 as the young player of the season. In his second season, he and his teammate Wendell Sailor scored the most attempts in the National Rugby League (NRL). He still holds the club record for the most points (26) in a game. At the World Cup in 2000 he was the captain of the Fijian national team, which was eliminated in the preliminary round.
The following year he was nominated for the Queensland Maroons and took part in the State of Origin 2001 season, in which he showed outstanding performance and recommended himself for the Australian national team ("Kangaroos"). That year he was again the player with the most attempts at the Broncos. In 2002 he succeeded again. He made his debut for the Kangaroos in the game against New Zealand, which was won 28:10, where he scored one try. At the end of the year he announced his move to rugby union.
Rugby union
Due to his speed and stature, he was also suitable for rugby union and was poached by the Australian Association in 2002. He signed a contract with the Waratahs and ran shortly afterwards for the rugby union national team of Australia ("Wallabies"). He made his debut in June 2003 when Australia met Ireland . At the time, he was the 43rd player to have played international matches for Australia in both variants.
At the 2003 World Cup , he was also part of the squad. In the preliminary round he scored attempts against Romania and Namibia . His attempt in the final against England could not prevent the heavy defeat of the Wallabies in Sydney .
Also in 2004 and 2005 Tuqiri was a permanent member of the national team and was mostly used as the outer three-quarters , but due to injuries he sometimes switched to the inner three-quarter position .
In 2006 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in rugby 7 . In the game for the bronze medal, however, Australia lost to Tuqiri's homeland Fiji. This season he reached the semi-finals in the Super 14 with the Waratahs. A year earlier, the team was inferior to the Crusaders in the final. At the Tri Nations he was suspended for five games due to a dangerous tackle against the New Zealand player Richie McCaw .
In the following season there were rumors that Tuqiri would return to the rugby league variant, he himself considered switching after the 2007 World Cup . He received numerous offers from the NRL and the Super 14, ultimately decided shortly before the end of the transfer phase for rugby union and a high-value contract with the Waratahs. He is now in the service of the Super 14 team and the Wallabies until 2012. Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie publicly criticized Tuqiri for his underperformance during the following season. He is too busy with little things and should act more intuitively in the field and play to his strengths. During a Super 14 game he attacked his teammate Sam Norton-Knight after a game-changing mistake and blamed him for the defeat. Tuqiri was hooted and publicly criticized for this action by his own supporters. On July 1, 2009, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) announced, surprisingly and without further explanation, the termination of the contract with Tuqiri.
He then moved to the renowned English first division club Leicester Tigers . There he made his debut on November 6th as a substitute in the 55th minute in a friendly against world champions South Africa . This home game was unexpectedly won by the Tigers with 22:17.
