Ferdinand Knauer

Ferdinand Knauer (born April 27, 1824 in Rumpin (Mansfeld district), today in Salzatal ; † December 8, 1889 in Gröbers near Halle / S.) Was a German farmer and agricultural scientist .

Life

Knauer, the son of a landlord, acquired extensive knowledge from many areas of the agricultural, natural and human sciences in self-study. After years of agricultural apprenticeship, he worked as an administrator on several estates in the province of Saxony . Ferdinand married his wife Clara, born on August 12, 1851. Tan. From this marriage a son and six daughters were born. From 1853 he lived and worked in Gröbers and the then still independent neighboring village of Schwoitsch. From 1857 he had the so-called Gröbers Castle built as his villa in Gröbers . The building was built in a neo-Gothic style, clad with silicified wood from its "Clara" lignite mine. From 1862 he was the owner of a farm in Gröbers, where he produced beet seed. By acquiring additional goods and leasing a manor, he later enlarged this business and developed it into a model economy with a test station and its own sugar factory . He died on December 8, 1889 in Gröbers and was buried in the local cemetery in Osmünde, where the Knauers' tomb is still to this day.

In 1885 Knauer founded the German Farmers' Union together with Berthold von Ploetz .

He made great contributions to growing sugar beet. He has published his knowledge and experience in several brochures. His name was best known for a monograph on sugar beet that was geared towards the needs of agricultural practice . This book, which was published repeatedly even after his death, was one of the best technical books on plant cultivation for decades.

The daughter Maria (* 1858, † 1936), born in 1858, was Hans Breuer's mother and the Knauer couple were grandparents .

Leipzig 1861. - The book was later published as Volume 19 of the "Thaer-Bibliothek" (Paul Parey Publishing House, Berlin) under the title Der Rübenbau. For farmers and sugar manufacturers . Ferdinand Knauer was the sole author until the 6th edition (1886). The 7th edition (1894) was published by his son Titus Knauer. The 8th and 9th editions (1901 and 1906) were revised and edited by Max Hollrung, the 10th, 11th and 12th editions (1912, 1917 and 1923) by Paul Holdefleiß.

Honors

Ferdinand-Knauer-Strasse was named after him in Gröbers in the Schwoitsch district.
