Ferdinand Schmitz (born November 26, 1866 in Oberdollendorf ; † September 5, 1943 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German teacher, journalist and local historian.

Life

Ferdinand Schmitz was born as the son of a kit smith and wine grower in Oberdollendorf, which today belongs to the city of Königswinter . In 1888 he passed the final examination at the Royal High School in Bonn. He then studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn . He completed his studies in 1893 with a doctorate. He then initially took a private tutor position near Düsseldorf. After two years he switched to the journalist career, first with the Neuss-Grevenbroicher Zeitung , then with the Pfälzische Zeitung in Speyer.

From 1898 until his retirement in 1932 he was a teacher at the higher boys' school, which later became the Progymnasium in Bergisch Gladbach . There he not only taught German, history and geography, but also Latin, Greek and drawing. Schmitz was married to Gertrud Richarz since 1898. Both had two sons and two daughters.

His extensive, written estate is now in the Bergisch Gladbach city archive . It mainly consists of literature on the local history and folklore of his hometown Oberdollendorf and the Siebengebirge, as well as his adopted home Bergisch Gladbach and the history of the local paper industry in the Strundetal.
