The Bergisch Gladbach City Archive is a municipal archive that secures the historical records of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Bergisch Gladbach and makes them accessible to the public. The archive also deals with the history of the town of Bensberg , which was independent until the end of 1974 and was merged with Bergisch Gladbach on January 1, 1975. The oldest holdings in the city ​​archive go back to the 16th century. Official as well as non-official archives from the history of the cities of Bergisch Gladbach (old and new city) and Bensberg as well as their residential areas and predecessor communities are stored .

The city archive is located in the Gustav-Lübbe-Haus, Scheidtbachstraße 23 in 51469 Bergisch Gladbach.

The archive

history

The city archive stores files , photos , newspapers , plans , posters , books and other documents on the history of Bergisch Gladbach. The files are summarized in individual files that are created and named after the respective authorities, organizations and people. In the holdings overview , which is also available online, general information about these holdings can be called up, such as the number of archive items , the period in which the documents were created, and the subject areas and administrative tasks for which the files were created and to be which they give information. The inventory overview also contains information about the existing photos, newspapers, plans and posters. Finding aids are also available for individual holdings .

The legal basis for the use of the archive by the public is the archive usage statute of 1994, which has since been amended or supplemented by several amendments. The archive documents can be researched and viewed during the opening hours of the city archive, for which a reading room is available. Most of the newspapers are available on microfilm ; individual issues can be re-enlarged. The city archive has numerous aerial photos from the 1950s and 1960s with motifs from the area of ​​the former cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg, some of which are available in printouts.

The city archive publishes its own series of books on the history of the city of Bergisch Gladbach (see publications) and offers information on the history competition of the Federal President (Germany) . Archive documents on a variety of topics are displayed in two archive showcases. Various lists provide information about population numbers, honorary citizens, mayors and city directors. A chronicle lists important dates for the city's history and the respective events. Information is also available on the Stolpersteine ​​laid in Bergisch Gladbach by the artist Gunter Demnig for victims of the Nazi regime .

Publications

In the series Contributions to the History of the City of Bergisch Gladbach , 12 volumes have been published since 1988. Volume 9 with the title Bergisch Gladbach City History , which was published in 2006 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the granting of city ​​rights to the municipality of Gladbach according to the Rhenish City Code , is now regarded as a standard work on the city history of Bergisch Gladbach.
