Fermín Estrella Gutiérrez

Fermín Estrella Gutiérrez (born October 28, 1900 in Almería , Spain , † February 18, 1990 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentinian writer of Spanish origin.

life and work

Estrella Gutiérrez immigrated to Argentina with his family around 1910 and settled in Buenos Aires. In 1920 he began to study law at the university there. In 1924 he was entrusted with a teaching position for literature at the Pedagogical Institute at the same university.

In 1928 he left his duties on hold for about a year and went on a study trip to and through Europe. When he returned to Buenos Aires, he worked as a lecturer again; but was also able to make a name for himself as a writer over time. In 1935 he made his debut as a writer with the publication of “Destiero”. In the same year, Estrella Gutiérrez founded the literary magazine “Norte” at his university and was editor of it until 1939. He also wrote for other newspapers, such as B. " La Nación ".

Between 1948 and 1951 he was an inspector responsible for adult education in Buenos Aires . He was accepted into the Argentine Writers ' Union and elected its president in 1959. He held this office until 1961. As early as 1955, the Academia Argentina de Letras accepted him as a member, the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua as a corresponding member.

In the spring of 1961, Estrella Gutiérrez made a second trip to and through Europe. He returned in the autumn of the same year and then retired into private life. On February 18, 1990, at the age of 89, he died in Buenos Aires, where he found his final resting place.

Estrella Gutiérrez was still completely committed to modernism in his early literary work . Later he found his own style in ultraism . In his poetry he spans the range from nature related to city poetry . In contrast to this, in his stories he addresses human conflicts and the psychological problems that often arise from them.
