Fermín Ezcurra Esáin (* 12. September 1922 in Oricáin ; † 6. March 2018 in Pamplona ) was a Spanish football functionary .

Career

After Ezcurra had moved to Pamplona with his family at the age of 13, he started his professional career at the local savings bank Caja de Ahorros Municipal de Pamplona , which later became part of Caja Navarra . Initially an errand boy, after successfully completing bookkeeping courses in evening school, he was promoted to director.

In 1971 Ezcurra took over the presidency of the CA Osasuna football club, which was economically troubled after relegation to the then third-rate Tercera División . In the following year, the club rose as a third division champion in the Segunda División , but switched between the second and third highest division in the following years. The overall third promotion to the second division during his presidency in 1977 was followed three years later by the return to the Primera División , from which the club was relegated in 1963.

Under Ezcurra's presidency, CA Osasuna established itself in the top Spanish league, and the team qualified twice for the UEFA Cup via the Primera División . In addition, she reached the semi-finals in the Copa del Rey in 1988 , the later title holder FC Barcelona sat down after a 0-0 draw in the first game at the Estadio El Sadar with a 3-0 return win after goals from twice successful Gary Lineker and Paco Clos at the Camp Nou . In addition, the foundation stone for the modern training ground Instalaciones de Tajonar was laid under his aegis , which was later extensively expanded and also houses the youth and women's teams. In a major legal reform in 1990, as a result of which almost all Spanish professional sports clubs had to change their legal form to a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva in order to increase publicity and transparency requirements , he was able to enforce that CA Osasuna alongside the only three other football clubs Real Madrid , FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao could continue to exist in the legal form of an association .

After the relegation of CA Osasuna in 1994, Javier Garro inherited him as president of the club, later he was appointed honorary president of the club. He has also received awards from the state for his services to sport.
