Fermín Ferreira y Artigas

Fermín Ferreira y Artigas (born December 26, 1831 in Montevideo , † August 10, 1872 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician , journalist and writer.

Ferreira y Artigas was born as the son of Dr. Fermín Ferreira and the Rosalía Artigas were born. He received a school education at the best schools in Montevideo at the time and successfully completed his studies at the Universidad de la República, which began in 1849, in 1854. He published numerous lyric poems. Ferreira y Artigas wrote, among other things, the novel "Inés de Lara". His drama "Donde las da las toman" was successfully performed in the theater. In 1851 he founded the weekly La Mariposa and in 1855, together with Horaclio Fajardo, ran El Eco de la Juventud Oriental . Ferreira y Artigas was also responsible for the satirical El mosquito . He was also editor of the newspaper El Siglo in 1863 and in 1865 for La Época . In 1868 at El Orden and in 1869 at La Libertad , he was one of the founders.

Ferreira y Artigas belonged to the Cámara de Representantes as a member of the Department of Florida in the 10th legislative period from February 15, 1868 to February 14, 1873, according to the official website of the Uruguayan parliament . The length of his membership in parliament contradicts the date of death on August 10, 1872, which is reported by other sources.

The Afro-Uruguayan Ferreira y Artigas was the first and to the tenure Ricardo Zavallas in the late 1920s, the only colored deputies Uruguay.
