Fermat is an impact crater on the front of the moon west of the Mare Nectaris , northeast of the Sacrobosco crater and southwest of Catharina , west of the Rupes Altai . The crater is heavily eroded, the crater floor relatively flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat .
