Fernand Anatole Meunier (also Ferdinand Anatole Meunier , born April 23, 1868 in Brussels , † February 13, 1926 in Bonn ) was a Belgian entomologist and paleontologist .

Life

Fernand Meunier worked as an assistant at the Geological Service of Belgium and later as curator of the Zoological Museum of Antwerp.

He described numerous new insect species from the Baltic amber and from the fossil deposit known today as the Rott fossil deposit, which chronostratigraphically is currently assigned to the Late Oligocene ( Chattian ). In 1894 he evaluated the Krantz collection in Bonn. As the first to describe it, he named the ichneumon wasp Polysphincta statzi ( Meunier , 1923) after the fossil collector and later Cologne teacher and entomologist Georg Statz and after the fossil collector Heinrich Bauckhorn from Siegburg, who collected for years in Rott and was the royal manager at the Royal Bullet Factory Wilhelmstrasse was active, the ant Formica bauckhorni Meunier , 1915, the long-legged fly Hercostomus bauckhorni ( Meunier , 1915) and the termite Ulmeriella bauckhorni Meunier , 1920.

The Austrian entomologist and palaeontologist Anton Handlirsch was very critical and hostile to some of his early writings and showed his view of Meunier's 1889 working method in detail and openly. He warned the publishers and editors of scientific journals against the inclusion of Meunier's writings.

At the end of 1918, Fernand Meunier had to leave Belgium because of his Germanophilia and moved to Bonn.

He was a member of the Société scientifique de Bruxelles and since 1890 a member of the Société entomologique de France .

Georg Statz named the caddis fly Phryganea meunieri Statz , 1936, in his honor in 1936.

In Germany, originals of the fossil insects described by Fernand Meunier can be found in the originals collection of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Berlin.

His collection of recent insects with 13 boxes of Hymenoptera and 91 boxes of Diptera went from his widow's estate in 1932/33 to the Natural History Association of the Prussian Rhineland and Westphalia in Bonn and in 1936 to the Zoological Institute of the University of Bonn. The insect collection was destroyed in the bombing of Bonn in 1945.
