Fernando Estévez del Sacramento (born March 3, 1788 in La Orotava , Tenerife , † August 14, 1854 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna , Tenerife) was a Spanish sculptor and painter.

Life

Fernando Estévez was the son of the silversmith Juan Estévez de Salas from La Laguna , who had his own workshop in La Orotava. Fernando Estévez received his first training in the Franciscan monastery of San Lorenzo in La Orotava. There he met the painter, sculptor and architect José Luján Pérez, in whose workshop in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria he worked until 1808. In 1808 Fernando Estévez opened his own workshop in La Orotava, which was overwhelmed with orders from the beginning to the end of his life. In 1846 he opened a workshop in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . From then on he also taught at the Provincial Academy of Fine Arts there.

Works

Virgen de la Candelaria

His sculptures, which depict exclusively religious subjects, are widespread in the Canary Islands. Particularly noteworthy are the crucifixion in today's cathedral of La Laguna, a Saint Peter in the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (La Orotava) and the Immaculate Conception in the Church of Concepción in La Laguna. His best-known work is certainly the Virgin of Candelaria in Tenerife. This figure, which he created in 1827, now replaces the statue of the patroness of the Canary Islands, which disappeared during a flood in 1826.
