Fernando Z. Maldonado

Fernando Zenaido Maldonado Rivera (born August 20, 1917 in Cárdenas , San Luis Potosí ; † March 23, 1996 in Cuernavaca , Morelos ), commonly known as Fernando Z. Maldonado and internationally also as Fred McDonald , was a Mexican musician who was primarily known as Composer was active.

Life

Maldonado was an avid music lover even in his childhood and composed his first song at the age of seven. It was the waltz Catarina, dedicated to his mother of the same name . Maldonado learned to play several musical instruments, including flute , piano and harmonium . As a young man he moved to Monterrey , where he started a musical group and was first played on the radio. The final breakthrough came with the move to Mexico City in 1945.

Two of his compositions were voted “Song of the Year” in Mexico: Amor de la calle (1950) and Volver Volver (1973).

To increase its marketing opportunities in the United States , a contract was signed with the CBS Corporation and the pseudonym Fred McDonald was chosen.

Maldonado and his wife were shot dead at around 3 a.m. during a break-in at their property in Cuernavaca , Morelos , early in the morning on 23 March 1996. The composer was hit by two bullets (one in the stomach and one in the chest) by the burglar, who was probably surprised by her waking up or her presence, and his wife was killed by a shot in the back.
