Ferocactus herrerae is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Ferocactus herrerae grows individually with spherical to cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of up to 2 meters with diameters of 45 centimeters. There are 13 deep, sharp-edged, spirally arranged ribs , which are initially strongly humped. The six gray, ribbed central spines have a curved to hook-shaped tip. They are up to 10 centimeters long and 5 millimeters wide. The radiating, white radial spines are twisted.

The funnel-shaped flowers are yellow and have a red central stripe. They reach a length of up to 6 centimeters and have the same diameter. The roughly 4 to 6 centimeters long, elongated, greenish yellow fruits are fleshy. They measure 2.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter and tear open at their base.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus herrerae is common in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa and Durango . It was first described in 1927 by Jesús González Ortega .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
