Ferocactus histrix is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet histrix means (Greek) 'hedgehog' or 'porcupine'.

description

Ferocactus histrix usually grows individually with depressed spherical to short cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of up to 110 centimeters with diameters of up to 80 centimeters. The shoots are somewhat woolly at their apex and are slightly depressed. There are 20 or up to 40 ribs . The areoles on it are almost connected to each other. The strong, yellow thorns turn brown with age. The one to four protruding central spines are straight or only slightly curved. They are transversely banded, flattened or angular and up to 9 inches long. The six to nine spread radial spines are slightly curved, twisting and reach a length of up to 8 centimeters.

The bell-shaped, yellow flowers reach a length of 2 to 3.5 centimeters and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. The 2 to 3 centimeters long fruits are fleshy and contain an almost liquid pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The distribution area of Ferocactus histrix extends in central Mexico from the Mexican state Durango south to Hidalgo and Michoacán .

It was first described as Echinocactus histrix in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . George Edmund Lindsay placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1955 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
