Ferocactus robustus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet robustus means 'strong', 'coarse' or 'firm'.

description

Ferocactus robustus grows with numerous shoots and forms large cushions with heights of up to 1 meter and a diameter of up to 5 meters. The spherical to club-shaped, deep green individual shoots have a diameter of 8 to 16 centimeters. There are eight sharp-edged, humped ribs . The areoles on it are far apart. The thorns emerging from it are ocher, reddish or somewhat purple in color. The four to seven protruding, straight central spines are strong and up to 6 centimeters long. The 10 to 14 radial spines are radiating. The upper ones are shaped like the central spines, the lower ones are bristle-like.

The funnel-shaped, yellow flowers reach a length of 3 to 4 centimeters and have the same diameter. The 2 to 3 centimeters long, yellow, spherical fruits are fleshy.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus robustus is common in the Mexican states of Puebla and Veracruz .

It was first described as Echinocactus robustus in 1837 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
