Ferocactus tiburonensis is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Ferocactus tiburonensis grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of up to 1 meter with diameters of 35 centimeters. There are about 21 high, somewhat humped ribs . The conspicuously fluted thorns are difficult to distinguish between central and radial thorns. The four cross, straight or twisted central spines are up to 9 centimeters long. The lowest of them is occasionally flattened. The awl, not bristle-like radial spines are similar in shape to the central spines.

The funnel-shaped, yellow flowers reach a length of up to 6 centimeters and have a diameter of 5 centimeters. The 2 to 4 centimeters long, spherical fruits are yellow and fleshy.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus tiburonensis is widespread on the island of Tiburón , part of the Mexican state of Sonora .

It was first described as Ferocactus wislizeni var. Tiburonensis in 1955 by George Edmund Lindsay . Curt Backeberg raised her to the rank of species in 1961.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
