history
In 1995 the Mexican government decided to privatize the state-owned railway company Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México . The entire network and operations were not privatized as one company, but long-term operating licenses for traffic on certain route networks were tendered. For the route network in western and central Mexico ( Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico and Ferrocarril Pacífíco Norte), the consortium of Union Pacific Railroad (13%), the construction company Constructoras ICA (13%) and the Mexican mining company Grupo México (74%) received 3,940.9 million dollars, making it the largest Mexican railroad company. The company started operations on February 19, 1998. In 1999 UP increased its stake to 26% by taking over the ICA stake. Since the start of operations, there has been constant investment, especially in new locomotives and the route network. Since 1999, 70 locomotives of the latest EMD SD70ACE and GE AC4400CW series have been acquired. Merger talks with Ferrosur have been going on since 2002. Due to the lack of approval from the antitrust authorities, the merger has not yet been implemented, although Ferrosur has been 100% owned by Grupo México's subsidiary Infraestructura y Transportes Mexico since 2005.
