The festival of the release of captured animals , the ritual release of birds, fish, cattle, horses, sheep, goats and the like. a. ( Tib. tshe thar ), is a traditional festival celebrated in Tibetan Buddhism . It is in many Tibetan areas every year on January 8 after the Tibetan calendar in the time of Monlam -Festes shortly after the Tibetan New Year ( Losar celebration), particularly in the monastery of Labrang in circles Xiahe of Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan Tibetan province Gansu , where between several hundred to over a thousand animals are released into the wild.

This type of release is generally regarded as a merit in Buddhism . In the old Daoist work Liezi it is also said that whoever liberates living beings on New Year's Day shows his goodness ( ēn ).
