Labrang Monastery (short for Labrang Trashi Khyil ) is located 2,800 meters above sea level in a river valley in Xiahe County in the Gannan Autonomous District of the Tibetans in the Gansu Province of the People's Republic of China . It is located in the transition area between the Tibetan and Hui settlement areas . Built in 1709, it became a hub in trade between central China, Tibet and the Silk Road . It is one of the six largest monasteries of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism .

description

On the approximately 86 hectare site of the Tibetan-style monastery there are 48 temple halls of various sizes as well as more than 500 Buddhist chapels and monk cells. Some consider the six-story Maitreya Hall, Chinese Jinwadian (gold brick hall), to be the most imposing, splendid and largest building in the monastery , although the furnishings of the oldest, but very winding-looking buildings from the founding period can be regarded as the most important. The Maitreya Hall houses a 7.4-meter (10-meter-high) statue of the future Buddha. Its top floor is a palatial square pavilion, the roof of which is made of gilded copper tiles and is adorned with gilded copper lions.

According to historical tradition, 3000 monks lived here in the heyday of the monastery. Even today, the Labrang Monastery is once again an important spiritual center in northwest China and a higher educational institution for Tibetan Buddhism. According to statistics, there are now more than 2000 monks living here again. However, since the young novices who are sent to the monastery on the decision of their parents are not registered and therefore not statistically recorded, the actual number is again significantly higher and should have roughly reached the previous number.

The monastery has six study faculties where the monks can study Buddhist theory, logic , astronomy , mathematics , medicine , calligraphy , phonology , dance arts , painting and sculpture .

The monastery has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (2-43) since 1982 .
