Disk management program

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As programs for disk management are in the computer , especially on computers such as PCs , utilities referred to the necessary data structures on hard drives and other data storage devices to create, modify, inspect, repair, or delete them. A backup and copy (cloning) function is often included.

The term partitioning programs is also common because one of the main functions is to create, manage and delete partitions . The English names are u. a. Partition Manager and Disk Manager .

Most operating systems include at least one program for managing partitions, creating boot media, and creating and verifying supported file systems .

Functions

Different computer systems require different structures on data storage media, such as hard drives or solid-state drives , in order to function. These structures allow only one start ( English boats ) of a computer, usually via a special boot sector or via a boot loader , which appropriately on the boot media must be maintained. However, hard drives were prone to failure from the start. It could therefore also happen that these structures were damaged, which made it impossible to start the computer system. In most cases, however, it was possible to repair these structures or to save the data that was still intact. These programs are therefore as English Disk Manager referred to - disk for disk and Manager for Administration program .

The main difference to pure partitioning programs lies in the functions they offer.

  • Initializing a data store: creating the necessary structures for a computer system, such as writing a partition table
  • Create, modify or delete a partition
  • Repair of a faulty structure of a data memory (e.g. a partition table, a boot sector or a start program)
  • Move, enlarge, shrink partitions
  • Edit partition data, such as flags or partition names
  • Create file systems on partitions (or the entire data storage device: "Super Disk")
  • Defragmenting file systems
  • Back up the partitioning (without data)
  • Backing up all or individual partitions, including the structures required for starting the computer
  • Cloning of partitions to another storage medium, including any modification of the data (structures) that may be necessary to make the result startable
  • Secure deletion of data structures, partitions or the unused memory area (" Eraser ")

While partitioning programs can usually only manage the partitions themselves and possibly also create a file system automatically, hard disk management programs also offer functions such as partition and file system repairs and data backups (again often separated into partition and file system backups). The function of a defragmentation program is also often included (for supported file systems).

Examples

Most operating systems have built-in partitioning programs or disk management programs.

Commercial disk managers are mainly available for Windows . Some of these can also be started from a live system :

  • Acronis Disk Director
  • EaseUS Partition Manager; the Home Edition can be used free of charge (as of 2017)
  • MiniTool Partition Wizard
  • O&O PartitionManager
  • Paragon Backup & Recovery, Partition Manager (also as a free version)
  • PowerQuest (acquired by Symantec in 2003 ) Partition Magic and Drive Image (no longer developed)
  • Symantec Ghost (formerly Norton Ghost)

For macOS (from 2001; previously referred to as "Mac OS X" to 2011 and "OS X" to 2016) and classic Mac OS (1984–2001):

  • Alsoft DiskWarrior
  • Micromat TechTool Pro
  • Paragon Hard Disk Manager
