Schillerpark fire station
The fire station 2100 Schillerpark , of Direktion West, is a fire station in the Berlin district of Wedding . The fire station is on Edinburgher Strasse in the English Quarter . It was the first watch of the Berlin fire brigade that was equipped with a motor-driven fire engine. The historic fire brigade sign on the street is the only one of its kind that has survived in Berlin. The Schillerpark fire station is a listed building.
history
The fire station was built in 1909/1910 by the town planning officer Ludwig Hoffmann . If the previous fire stations were equipped for horse and carts, this building was built for motorized vehicles for the first time. To be able to service them better, Hoffmann designed a carriage hall with skylights .
On June 2, 1910, the Schillerpark fire station was put into service under the then name "Zugwache 23". In 1914, firefighters were called up to serve in the army in connection with the First World War . 68 fire service officers were killed during the war. In 1924 the "Zugwache 23" was renamed "Feuerwache Schillerpark" and was given the "42" as the train number. In 1933 the Berlin fire brigade was subordinated to the local police administration and from then on called itself the "fire-fighting police". In 1939 there was another renaming of the fire-fighting police to "fire protection police". During the Second World War , 260 members of the Berlin fire brigade were killed.
In 1949, the first ten-week basic course for new hires took place at the Schillerpark fire station. In 1972/1973 another hall was built next to the previous fire station, which was supposed to meet the needs of modern fire engines. A renovation followed in 2008, during which, among other things, the facades were repaired and given a paint job that was true to the original.
Fire station today
Like the Prenzlauer Berg fire station, the Schillerpark fire station is one of the so-called bell guards today, with over 20,000 calls out every year.
building
The vehicle hall has reliefs above the gate pillars that represent the protection of people from fire and destruction. In addition to the light from the skylights, glass panes are also attached to the four gates to facilitate the maintenance of the vehicles inside. Since the renovation in 2008, the doors have been powered electrically.
Around the vehicle hall there is a three-winged building in which the bedrooms and common rooms for the teams are located. There is a roof garden above the vehicle hall, which is bordered by a loggia towards the street . The teams should be able to enjoy the fresh air of the directly adjacent Schiller Park during rest periods . There is also a workshop building in the courtyard. The facades are made of plastered shell limestone .
